From: Cork/London
Active: 1983-88
Style: Indie
Lineup:
- Mick Lynch - vocals (Nov 1984-)
- Chris Salmon - guitar
- Kev Hopper - bass
- Rob McKahy - drums
Bio:
Formed in London in 1983 by Nick Hobbs (vocals), Chris Salmon, Kev Hopper and
drummer Rob McKahy from Cork (ex Constant Reminders,
Max Von Rap). Hobbs left to for The Shrubs, leaving
the instrumental trio in need of a singer. When McKahy heard that Mick Lynch
(ex Constant Reminders,
Mean Features) had moved to London
he tracked him down and invited him to join Stump in November 1984.
Supporting Blue in Heaven in September 1986
After an acclaimed debut EP on Ron Johnson Records, the band's profile in the UK
began to grow through regular touring, a couple of Peel sessions, making the covers
of the influential weeklies (both Melody Maker and NME) and making their TV debut
on Channel 4's The Tube. When their self-released mini-LP "Quirk Out" came
out in 1986, it peaked at #2 in the indie charts during a remarkable 26 week run.
They signed to Ensign Records in 1987.
The recording sessions for their major label debut LP "A Fierce Pancake" in Berlin
with Holger Hiller at the controls did not go as well as expected, and there were
further problems with American producer John Robie in London. A then relatively
unknown Steve Albini was one possibility put to the band but they opted for
Hugh Jones, who'd done "Quirk Out". The resultant album was a classic but was
also as far as the band could go. They split at the end of 1988.
Mick Lynch died in December 2015.
Kev Hopper's interesting history of the band is no longer online, alas.

Disc 1: tracks 1-6 (Quirk Out LP), 7-10 (Mud on a Colon EP), 11 (First After Epiphany)
Disc 2: (A Fierce Pancake LP)
Disc 3: B-sides and unreleased post-Pancake recordings
Notes:
I'm not sure if it's absolutely complete, but it's close enough. I haven't got
my copy yet so I don't know the details for the tracks on disc 3, i.e.
whether they are Peel versions, B-side versions or previously unreleased,
though 6 songtitles look new to me. An amazing collection by the looks,
and frankly I'm surprised it came out.
Earlier in 2007 a double-CD version was announced with a different tracklising.
Kevin Hopper posted a message on amazon explaining the takeover of Sanctuary by
Universal Music postponed the original 2007 release and perhaps also triggered
a rethink of the sets contents -- lucky for us! The 2nd disc of the originally
announced set was the same as disc 1 above, while the the first disc contained
all of A Fierce Pancake except for one track ("Heartache") plus some B-sides:
1. Living It Down
2. In The Green
3. Roll The Bodies Over
4. Bone
5. Eager Bereaver
6. Chaos
7. Alcohol
8. Charlton Heston
9. Doctor (A Visit To)
10. Fierce Pancake
11. Boggy Home
12. Ice The Levant (B-Side Chaos)
13. Safe Sex (B-Side Chaos)
14. The Rats (B-Side Chaos)
15. The Song Remains (B-Side Buffalo)
16. Thelma (B-Side Buffalo)
Promo copies of this 2-CD set may exist. If any can confirm this, please do.
There's also been some amusing confusion online as to the compilations title.
Besides being report as "A Fierce Pancake And Beyond" and "A Fierce Pancake
Before And Beyond", one site has called it "Fierce Panda And Beyond"!
