From: Cork/London
Active: 1982-85
Style:
Lineup:
- Finbarr Donnelly (RIP) - vocals
- Ricky Dineen - guitar
- Mick Stack - guitar
- Keith 'Smelly' O'Connell - drums
Bio:
Donnelly & Dineen (both ex Nun Attax) met
guitarist Mick Stack in 1981 and began to play together. They added cellist Una Ni Chanainn
who they'd seen performing in a play with Mick Lynch (of the Mean Features).
This 2 guitar and cello band evolved into Five Go Down To The Sea in 1982
with another ex Nun Attax Smelly on drums.
When they moved to the UK in 1983, Una stayed behind.
They released the "Knot A Fish" EP on Kabuki in 1983, the "Glee Club" EP on
Abstract in 1984 and "Singing In Braille" on Creation in 1985, a unique trio of
recordings which are highly recommended. When the band split in 1985,
Mick Stack left for the USA, Smelly withdrew for live music and returned to Cork,
while Donnelly & Dineen formed Beethoven.
There are many unreleased studio and radio session tracks (e.g. "While My Guitar Meryl Streeps")
and probably lots of live material aswell. A band crying out for a discography CD.
"their music is characterized by discordant erratic melodies, tough persistent
drumming and extremely distinctive and original vocals."--Vox #14
In 2001, Paul McDermott produced a radio documentary called Get That Monster Off
The Stage, broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in July 2001. This is an audio
portrait of Finbarr Donnelly and his bands (Nun Attax, Five Go Down to the Sea,
Beethoven). It can now be downloaded from www.getthatmonsteroffthestage.com
In June 2004, Ricky Dineen assembled a band to play a few Nun Attax/5 Go Down To
The Sea songs as part of a play called "Losing Web" staged at Corcadorca in Cork.
