From: Dublin
Active: 1984-90
Style:
Lineup:
- Eoin McEvoy - vocals & guitar
- Frank Kearns - guitar
- Feargal MacAndris AKA Andrews - bass
- Wayne Sheehy - drums
Bio:
Bombastic U2 soundalikes formed in 1984 by Frank Kearns (ex Blue Russia)
and Eoin McEvoy (ex Jump Iceland).
Cactus World News were one of a number of mid-80s bands who favoured
a big, overblown sound which instead of sounding passionate came across
as so much hot air. Released their debut single on Mother Records before
signing to MCA. They failed to break in America and were dropped before
the second LP could be released. McEvoy & Kearns split acrimoniously
from MacAndris & Sheehy and continued as a duo, eventually releasing
the final single in 1990.
Wayne Sheehy (ex Banditz, Driveshaft, 1990)
and Feargal Andrews played with in a brief line lineup of The Fountainhead which came about
due to Wayne's involvement with Hinterland, i.e both bands were managed by Ciaran Owens at
the time.
Frank Kearns now runs his own studio
and records as Francis Xavier.
Feargal Andrews became a website designer.
A reformed CWN (without Eoin McEvoy) will play the Celtic Rock Festival at the INEC in Killarney on
Saturday 30 July 2011.
