According to the Seventies Sevens site, the Rex label dates as
far back as 1933, to the days of 78rpm discs. Rex was acquired in 1937 by Decca Records who promptly
retired the label. The name was revived in 1965 by Irish Record Factors, the Irish distributor for Decca
Records at that time, and was used for releases by Irish artists. It was retired when Decca was taken
over by Polygram in the late 70s.
The repertoire includes a few showbands but also ballad singers, cabaret groups, solo performers,
and some pop/rock acts. The labels' most notable success was Dana's 1970 Eurovision winner, but the
label was also home to The Memories from 1967 until 1975.
Potentially interesting records not included in the main pages are indicated in bold.
Note: Rex Heritage was an unrelated, American independent label. See here for details.
