From: Ballymena
Active: 60s/70s
Style: Pop
Bio:
Clodagh Rodgers (b.1947) is a singer from Ballymena, Co.Antrim. Her father was a
local promoter who spotted her talent early and she made her stage debut at 13.
In 1962, at the age of 15, she signed to Decca Records and released her first
single in November, credited to 'Cloda Rodgers'. She switched to EMI Columbia
Records in 1965, but her recording career didn't really take off and she
remained best known for her TV and film work.
This changed in 1969 when she began working with songwriter and producer Kenny
Young. She'd signed to RCA Records the year before and made an impact om BBC
TV's Colour Me Pop. Her third RCA single "Come Back and Shake Me" was the first
of a string of hits that lasted into the early 1970s. She is probably best known
for representing the UK in the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest with "Jack In The
Box". Ironically the chart hits dried up at the end of that year with "Lady Love
Bug" being her last single to chart in the UK.
She continued to appear regularly on TV on shows like The Two Ronnies and
Morecambe And Wise, and had her own The Clodagh Rodgers Show on RTE television
in Ireland. She also appeared regularly on stage (musicals, variety, cabaret,
etc). In 1977 she recorded for Polydor and managed an appearance on Top Of The
Pops, but the single "Save Me" failed to chart. It has since been covered by
several other artists including Helen Reddy, Louise Mandrell, Merrilee Rush and
Clout. A 1980 B-side "My Simple Heart" had a similar story, becoming a Top 10
hit for The Three Degrees when they covered it.
These days it is her recordings for RCA from 1969-71 which are of most interest.
