The Top Spin label was launched in 1974 by Tony Loughman, publisher of Entertainment News and
manager of Top Rank Promotions, probably as an offshoot of Top Rank Promotions.
Top Rank was established in 1963 and by the 1970s was the biggest management company
in the country music business in Ireland, managing people like Big Tom, Susan McCann, Philomena Begley, etc.
Top Rank also owned a chain of ballrooms and other venues across the country and a recording
studio situated in Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan.
Most of the artists on the label were signed to Top Rank Promotions management
company, most notably Philomena Begley.
Top Rank also brought country stars from America to perform in Ireland:
Porter Wagoner, Charlie Pride, Hank Locklin, Johnny Cash, etc.
Some of these artists also recorded for Top Spin.
Confusingly, Top Spin sometimes refers to itself as just Spin Records, e.g. it often lists it's address on the
back of album covers as "Spin Records Ltd, Castleblayney, Monaghan, Ireland".
This should not be confused with the Belfast label Spin Records.
