Long defunct London-based label founded by Ronan O'Rahilly, owner of the pirate
radio station Radio Caroline, at the suggestion of music business mogol in the making
Phil Solomon who joined the Caroline board in 1966. Solomon had previously
worked in record distribution with Decca and was also a band manager and tour promoter.
Phil Solomon was the son of Morris Solomon of Solomon & Peres, a major
Irish distributor which was finally acquired by Decca in 1981.
Major Minor was launched on 25 November 1966. Records were manufactured by CBS and
distributed by Selecta.
Major Minor released some excellent singles by Irish artists (Taste, Them,
David McWilliams, Odin's People) and
licensed releases by foreign artists that hadn't been picked up by the UK majors such as
the Isley Brothers, Johnny Nash, Los Canarios from Spain, and Golden Earrings and Tee-Set
from Holland. Major Minor releases were also licensed to similar sized labels in Spain, Holland, Scandanavia
and elsewhere. The vast majority of the labels releases were country, easy listening,
Irish ballad, light orchestral and generally middle-of-the-road fare. Despite what you may
read elsewhere, there are in fact very few showband releases, and nothing was ever released by
The Wheels, a mistake originally printed in some reference book and now often repeated
in articles about the label and Radio Caroline. There are also highly sought after releases
by bands like July, Pulse, Crazy Elephant, Head Machine, Zoo, Roger Bunn, etc.
Releases were plugged mercilessly on Radio Caroline, of course, whether
DJ's liked the records or not. Emperor Rosko was reputedly fired repeatedly for refusing to play Major Minor
releases, only to be re-hired by Ronan O'Rahilly. He finally quit over this issue.
Major Minor ran into trouble due to poor sales during 1969 and 1970 and ceased
operating in September 1970.
I believe parts of the back catalogue were sold to Mervyn Solomon of Emerald Records.
