Saw Doctors

From: Galway

Active: 1987-

Style:

Lineup:

Bio:

Phenomenally successful Irish rural rock band whose website outlines their career to date. I've listed them here to highlight their links to earlier bands. Davy Carton had been in new wave/powerpop band Blaze X whose lone single remained virtually unknown for many years. When Blaze X split in 1981, Carton retired from the music business. Leo Moran (ex The Mix, All Cats Are Grey) left Tuam rock/reggae band Too Much For The Whiteman and began performing with vocalist Mary O'Connor in 1986. He pursuaded Carton to come out of retirement to join them and they, along with John 'Turps' Burke and Padraig Stevens, became the first lineup of the Saw Doctors.

The Sawdoctors roots in Blaze X reveals itself in their choice of live covers during encores. "Teenage Kicks" is regularly given a good going over, and the band once performed "Big Time" at the Limelight in Belfast with Brian Young of Rudi.

Tony Lambert played keyboards with the band in the early 90s but was never a full member. He was paid session fees for his appearances. In 1993, he won the Irish national lottery, winning 1 million euro, and temporarily became more famous (in Ireland) than the band he played for. This became a source of embarrassment for the band and he was eventually asked to play "off stage" by the manager. So he left, with no ill feelings.
