Bio:
Punk? New wave? Unreconstructed hoary old seventies rockers more like!
Room Service date back to the mid-70s band Niro Jade who
included David Sweny (pronounced 'Swenny') and Tony Kelly. Sweny
and Kelly were also in a mid-70s pop/rock band called Junior
with Dick Fagan (vocals) who was an early member of Room Service.
Room Service were described by Niall Stokes in Hot Press in 1978 as being
"like Steely Dan but without the songs" (good one Niall!). The band played rock with jazz
and/or funk stylings, and included Ron Cooney on flute at that time.
The band played the famous Dandelion Market venue in 1979 on two occasions, on
Sunday 29th April and Saturday 23rd June, the latter with Blue Angel.
Ron Cooney had left the band by the time their single was recorded 3 years
later in 1981. It was produced by Brendan Bonass of Stepaside and is good pop/rock,
worth tracking down.
Denis Woods who plays keyboards on side one is better known for his work with
that other bastion of hoary old rockerdom Clannad.
Tony Kelly was later in The Shy and Frame Of Mind.
Ron Cooney became a music teacher and is the subject of the current documentary
film Ballymun Lullaby [2011].
Nothing to do with Little Ginny's backing band Room Service who appear on her 1978 LP released through SRT in the UK.
