Bio:
Jimmy MacCarthy (b.1953) has enjoyed a lengthy career as a songwriter in Ireland.
His best known song is "Ride On", recorded by Christy Moore. His songs have been
recorded by Mary Black, The Corrs, Maura O'Connell, and many others.
Jimmy's first significant band was Southpaw with
Declan Sinnott.
Formed late 1978 and managed by
Elvira Butler (Downtown Campus, Reekus Records),
Southpaw played laid back
country rock, all original material.
They planned to release an LP on the small Cork label Circa Records but
this never came to pass.
When Southpaw split, Jimmy retained the services of the rhythm section to
form the Jimmy MacCarthy Band who released a couple of singles on Mulligan
Records in 1981. Described on ebay as "folky powerpop", both singles are basically folk-rock.
"Miles of Eyes" was Jimmy's first significant hit.
Jim MacCarthy has concentrated on songwriting rather than performing though he releases
material occasionally.
