From: IRL
Active: 70s-80s
Style: Singer-songwriter
Lineup:
- Fergus O'Reilly - guitar & vocals
Bio:
Despite having read the press releases for several of the singles listed below, I knew next
to nothing about Fergus until recently, when one of his collaborators got in touch.
His full name is Fergus O'Reilly. He was born in Ireland.
possibly London-based, possibly with family in Sligo.
Update: I just found a German version of his 1977 single Hello which has a short bio on the back
cover which describes Fergus as being born in the the West of Ireland but now living in London.
He was signed by Rondercrest management in the same year it was established, 1976. His first
three singles were on the Paladin label.
Polydor picked up the second and third of these for release in Ireland. When the Paladin deal
was finished, subsequent releases in the UK were on Rondercrest Records, up until 1980,
followed by two small indie label releases in 1982 and 1985. Polydor Ireland did not license
the Rondercrest singles but they did release the debut LP.
The singles are decent efforts, poppy for the most part. The album is much more interesting. About half
the tracks are in the same vein as the singles, but the other half are remarkable acoustic tracks with
arresting, understated arrangements and charming, wistful performances. These tracks are
real growers and it's surprising the LP isn't better known because of them.
The singles can still be found for reasonable prices but the album is painfully difficult to find.
If anyone knows any more about Fergus, please get in touch.
